Magnolias in Minnesota?

Much of Minnesota is well suited for growing Magnolias. We have found three varieties that have done well for us as well as for our customers. These beautiful plants will usually flower early in spring before the leaves emerge. Put one of these plants on your list of must have plants in your yard.

The Royal Star or Stellata Magnolia can be grown as a shrub or small tree. This plant will grow to about 10 feet tall and will have creamy white semi double flowers.

The Merrill Magnolia is the largest variety we carry. These can grow 25 to 30 feet tall and again can be grown multistemmed like a birch or can be trimmed up to a single trunk. Flowers on these will be single white blossoms.

The newest addition to our nursery is a variety called Ann Magnolia. The diminutive plant grows about 8 feet tall and flowers later in the spring with beautiful lavender blooms.

Fall Fiesta Maple

Fall Fiesta® Sugar Maple

One look is all you’ll need to see that Fall Fiesta® is superior to the other sugar maple varieties. The

branching is full and symmetrical. Leathery, glossy, deep green leaves are

resistant to leaf tatter and leafhopper damage. A rapid grower, easy to transplant

and also resistant to sun scald and frost cracks. Outstanding fall color, shows far

more oranges and reds than other sugar maples. Prefers a moist yet well-drained

soil with a slight acidity for optimum growth.

We stock this variety in sizes ranging from 6 feet up to 14 to 15 feet.

Candy Store Phlox Series

     Candy Store Phlox

Bailey Nurseries has release another winner in the form of a new series of Phlox they call the Candy Store series. All the varieties appear to have good resistance to mildew which usually is the plague of garden phlox. Their short stature makes them a good fit in any perennial bed. These are a must have plant in your garden. Try a blend of all four colors. All are fragrant and are excellent butterfly and hummingbird attracters. Check our Plants section for expanded descriptions of each variety.

Pinky Winky Hydrangea

Pinky Winky™ Hydrangea

Hydrangea paniculata ‘DVPpinky’ PP16,166

Pinky Winky™ resembles its parent ‘Pink Diamond’ in size and hardiness. The difference is in the size of foliage and flowers. Fourteen-inch blooms are the norm and each floret contains 7 petals instead of 4, nearly doubling the petal count and giving the blooms a much fuller look. Stems are also stronger and able to support the large blossoms. (CPBR 2892)
